I have to commend Download Festival for understanding Facebook and using it really well. With wall posts like 'Is everyone doing ok? Not long to go now.' and 'Two reasons to be cheerful: 1 – it’s Friday. 2 – only 88 days until Download. Life is good' they clearly understand the basics of social media. Judging by the comments and likes on these posts they are clearly doing the right thing for their audience too.
I see a lot of Facebook Fan pages that are restricted by fear of what could be said or by everything having to be run past the legal department. This stifles the conversation and in some cases can kill any personality from what's being said. An important element of social media is to be able to react quickly to what's being said, most companies wouldn't have a member of the legal department stood next to their sales team in a shop...shop staff don't constantly run to their bosses when someone needs a question answering....so why does this happen in social media.
The one thing Download (and many others) do very well is engage in conversation, if someone asks a tricky question they answer it....and answer it quickly! If there is a conversation going on they are involved. They ask questions, post interesting stuff (that isn't just selling Download) and are a useful resource. I'm always looking for what they're posting in my newsfeed and as a result see them as the expert in their field and also someone to have a chat with.
